We have been relishing the bank holiday weekend – relaxing with family and friends and taking the time to appreciate the things we love and care for the most. But with a bit of extra time on our hands, there is nothing quite like finding our own little special place with our latest favourite read or newspaper to totally unwind and relax.
At Layer we love any excuse to move some of our indoor pieces to the garden, literally creating rooms and spaces that blend with nature’s flora and fauna. Throwing a blanket on the lawn with cushions and throws to snuggle into, the radio playing smooth tunes and a cup of your preference is just heaven.
This was a mail-order pergola that we constructed ourselves. We wanted it to blend into the existing foliage but with the roof, it totally gives the impression that we are in another room. We often sit here late into the evening, lighting some candles and a chimenea to add extra warmth when the temperature drops.
This adorable table and chairs are from Petersham Nurseries – our go-to ‘happy place’, a truly inspirational haven which masters the aesthetics of indoor-outdoor living.
THE GREEN UMBRELLA
To prove that we really don’t stick to any rules about price or provenance these little beauties are from Ikea – we love the way the fresh white pops against the green foliage of the garden.
SIDE BY SIDE
By positioning these matching chaise (also from Ikea!) next to each other, there is always a shared place to head for when you need to unwind together. The neutral colour is perfect, using cushions and throws to totally change and transform things when the mood takes you.
The perfect moment – inspired by reading about the beautiful Grace Kelly and listening to our favourite early morning Sunday music. The radio is the well-recognised Roberts and the chair is from Brissi. The beautiful Victorian pot is a rare find from a local car boot sale.
OVERSIZED AND CALLING MY NAME
This chair was a gift to Hannah from her Dad when she moved in to her first flat, purchased from John Lewis. It’s almost the same proportions as a love seat and is the perfect place to curl up under a blanket.
Sometimes all that you need is a little time on your hands, a breath of fresh air and the last fifty pages…
If we really have to come inside, then the obvious place to unwind is in the bath. This vintage drinks trolley is a little treasure from Sunbury Antiques Market which we use to store our favourite fragrances. The yellow towels and flannels from West Elm give the room a flash of colour.
JUST ANOTHER HOUR
We all love to stay in bed when the clock isn’t ticking. The fun and beautiful parrot lamp is from the amazing Abigail Ahern at Debenhams and the bedside table is a purchase from an Antiques Fair in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, France.
